Framing Opportunities Within
Commercial and Investment Banking
The U.S. Financial Services practice within a large, international consulting company focuses on multiple aspects of delivering value for clients. Implementing sustainable results that exceed client expectations remains paramount. In addition, proactive thought leadership that places current client deliverables in a broader context is increasingly required. This same strategic thought is also proving useful in guiding internal account development processes.

The Financial Services leadership team looks beyond the walls of the consulting company to ensure access to best-of-breed strategic thinking. With the idea of gaining a fresh perspective, and based on previous success working with SimpatiCo, the leadership team initiated the joint development of a framework for discussing Internet impacts and the associated opportunities within the commercial and investment banking industries.

       SimpatiCo's Role

We delivered a point of view of the commercial and investment banking markets, including suggestions for new business opportunities. Working with two U.S. Financial Services consultants, SimpatiCo ensured the content was relevant to current and prospective clients of the practice and shared thought processes regarding the development of the point of view. SimpatiCo presented the perspective, including the following, to the Financial Services team during a work-session designed to enhance knowledge and stimulate new thinking.

  • Logic for identifying and filtering market trends
  • Identification and definition of five, key, Internet impact areas relevant to any company
  • Activity chains for both commercial and investment banking
  • Framework for identifying and conveying Internet opportunities
  • Nine opportunities, each with examples from both commercial and investment banking
  • Competency-based framework for understanding the correlation among opportunities
  • Template for detailed analysis and pursuit of each opportunity

       Results

Within three weeks, the U.S. Financial Services team shares a new way of summarizing opportunities and has increased their understanding of the commercial and investment banking industries. For a major global banking client, account managers have used the framework to map existing Internet initiatives and identify account development possibilities. The point of view has been shared with U.S. Financial Services practice client executives. The framework will be recommended to the Financial Services global leadership as an account development tool.
